Showing no diminution of his gavel-wielding technique, Past-President
Steve Dolan called our meeting to order as this week’s
“Guest Prez”.
Songmeister Chris Boland presented “Hot Town, Summer in
the City,” a ditty obviously written in another place at another time,
judging by the low-hanging clouds and 60+ degree outside temperature –in
AUGUST?
Guests included our Arizona rep. Norm Noble, and Sir
Doc’s much better half, Marilyn Marsh.
Our speaker was Craig “Sideline Smitty” Smith, former
sports writer for the Seattle Times. He in turn presented two
representatives of the upcoming Boeing Golf Classic, a Champions PGA
tour event to be held at Snoqualmie Ridge August 22-28 (according to
published events calendars, or August 26-28, if you are an out-of-touch
Sergeant-at-Harms whom we know of).
Jill Wiggins, Director of Communications and Marketing
for the event, gave a nice overview: built in 1999, this will be the
seventh year that Snoqualmie Ridge has hosted the Boeing Classic It will
benefit the Benaroya Research Institute, which works in the field of
autoimmune diseases. 100% of net income from the event to goes to the
Institute. Some 1.3 million dollars has been raised from sponsors. Over
1000 volunteers will work during the week, each actually
paying $85 for the privilege.
There are multiple events in the days leading up to the actual Seniors
play, and our military is being specially honored throughout the week.
Sgt. Petry, the recent recipient of the Medal of Honor, will be among
those in attendance.
Michelle DeLancey, Tournament Director, provided a lot
of detail about the PGA event itself. Michelle easily rattled off each
of the past 6 winners much faster than I could write them down. This is
one of 27 events on the PGA Champions Tour. There will be approximately
80 players in the tournament. Each pays a $100 registration fee, plus
their own hotel bills. They do
receive complimentary Cadillacs for the week, plus free meals. The total
purse to be divided among the players is $2,000,000. A big draw this
year should be Fred Couples.
Attendance fees are $20 per day during the week, $40 per day during the
weekend tournament, or $60 for a full week pass. More information is
available at http://boeingclassic.com.
In other news:
Charlie Russell reported on the progress he and Karen
MacDonald have made in the past four weeks planning the Operation Warm
event as part of the Santa’s Breakfast this December. The price of coats
has risen (what else is new?) to $18+. Charlie hopes to have some 600
coats available this year. His report generated some spirited debate
about how to ensure that there are enough coats for all attendees at the
breakfast. The number of participants has risen yearly and never seems
to match up with the number of coats, or coat sizes, needed. It was
pointed out that the school district has acquired many more students
designated as low-income in the past two years, and that our coat order
is put in long before a head count can be made. A reflection of the
nation’s economic woes, and a problem for which no ready solution seems
available....
Jorge Gonzalez and Jeff Lair presented
an example of a pediatric wheel chair, a design size much in demand in
Mexico, where Jeff’s passion lies. Such chairs retail for $375. The two
“passed the hat,” and in short order pulled in $820, more than enough to
provide two of these chairs! Very
nice, guys, and, very nice, Woodinville Rotary!!
For your calendar:
Aug 9 – auction committee meeting
Aug 20 – crab feed at Daryl and Stacie Ecklands’
Saturday afternoon
Aug 23 – New Members’ breakfast at the Maltby Café;

Birthdays:
July 31 - Susan Webster – about to become an empty
nester with two kids in college.
Cheer up, Susan. Four years goes by in a hurry...then, they’ll be
b-a-a-c-k....
Aug 4 – Pam Johnstone – poor Pam won’t be here next
week to celebrate, because...she’ll
be in London and/or Paris (wherever)!
Oktoberfest Committee chair Steve Dolan reminds us
about procuring auction items and guests – visit the website! Erv DeSmet
has donated a visit to a blower of glass. (More hot air,
counselor?)
Gaylen Sauve went over the ins and outs of setting up
the sound system...in about 22 seconds. Alex Racz
volunteered to try to make sense of it all....
The Sarge - Jay Fiske - fined anyone who didn’t attend
last week’s event at Nardoland. Also, anyone who actually
read the Program of Events at
the Boeing Classic.....
Special Assistant to the
President Terry Jarvis demonstrated that one actually
can forget the intricacies of
gavel-banging...
