Reach Within to
Embrace Humanity

From the Desk of Rotary Reporter Jorge Gonzalez

August 16th

Great meeting with lots of participation from everyone, this club rocks!

First the bad news, Fred Kempe is leaving us, he received a job offer he could not refuse and he is going to be working in Seattle and rejoin his old University District Rotary club, he will be missed of course but not as much as we will miss Kathryn his lovely wife. We wish Fred most success in his new endeavor.

Now for the good news, George Phillips received his Paul Harris award from most recent past president Bronco Ervin A. DeSmet (darn spell check, I am spelling “DeSmet” the correct way but the PC keeps putting this silly red underline, I will have to have another talk with Gates about this later, for crying out loud DeSmet is a past PRESIDENT, how come it does not put the silly red underline when I type Carter, Reagan, Bush or even Clinton for that matter).

Past President Erv said the $1,000 contribution George made was the out of the goodness of his heart and George said that he did because of the strong arm twisting Erv put on him, in any event the Rotary Foundation is in better shape now thanks to George Phillips, good job! On the subject, George mentioned that he will be talking to the three members not currently contributing to the foundation; I hope these guys are aware of George’s size and strength.

We have had a number of programs over the years that for the most part have been very good, however I do not recall one as engaging as the one we had today. Executive Director Jackie Gould from Acres of Diamonds in Duvall did a very good job getting all of us involved in her presentation on the work her organization does to facilitate the transitioning of lives for women in need by helping them to become better parents and members of society in general. Acres of Diamonds operates under a very tight budget from donations from individuals and churches. (For those of you who were not at the meeting I am enclosing the questionnaire that Jackie brought to the meeting; see if you can come with the correct answers). By the way, if you are planning to spend time at Acres of Diamonds you need to be aware that napping is not allowed, and that if you want to drink coffee you must bring your own, or better yet bring a bunch to share because, as Jackie said, “coffee is gold”. At the end of the program President Hugo presented her with a bag of coffee beans and a check for $5,000 thanks in part to the grant that Alex Hopkins procured on our behalf which by the way is the first ever District Simplified Grant for our club, way-to-go Alex.

It has been twelve years since Dr. John Ive last gave a classification talk. Classification talks by charter members are now part of President Hugo’s idea to have them make an appearance at selected meetings to tell us non-charter members about themselves. John Ive said that the story about his childhood has not changed since his last presentation twelve years ago. What has changed, however, is that he now only works, get this, four days a MONTH! As a teenager, John’s dad told him he should study to become a civil engineer and so he did but then – while in the military reserves working at a hospital – he discovered that dentistry was his true passion and so back he went to The U – right Chris? – and by the age of 33 he was out in the world practicing in orthodontics. Recently he sold his practice and that is the reason for the light schedule.

His Rotarian journey began at Northshore along other individuals who subsequently left to follow then Northshore’s president-elect Hugo to form our club. At the time Hugo had become president-elect (by default) and not wanting to serve in such prestigious role he decided to solve his dilemma by founding another club, and that ladies and gentlemen is how Woodinville Rotary Club was born. Fast-forward to 2011 and us at Woodinville being smarter than the guys at Northshore figured out that all Hugo needed to become president was arm-twisting from Erv.

Laurie and John Ive at Crabfeast Saturday - Works 4 days a  month, tinkers the rest!                            Steve may tinker less for a while

Ladders, motorcycles and chainsaws will eventually get you, my advice for Steve Dolan is to stay away from the last two, too bad he did not read this before otherwise he would still have full use of both hands and being the good Rotarian he is nothing will stop him from making sure that Oktoberfest is a complete success. All that is lacking for his great accomplishment are asses and items, so go ahead and do your part to make this happen – procure an item and invite some guests!

Kudos to Susan Webster, Tom Quigley, Becky Clark, Chris Boland and Eric Greenwood for their hard work Monday night at Rotary Community Park, all its needed is one more show of force to have shiny walkways all around – Susan needs your help, make it happen!

Remember Fred the guy that left Woodinville for a better job in Seattle? According to some reports he stopped a robber from entering his house in Florida! So Fred here is the question: How come you are able to stop a crime in Florida at the time you are living in Issaquah and not stay in our club while working in Seattle?

Happy Dollars were aplenty, PP Doc Al Marsh for his daughter’s graduation from nursing school in Arizona where the warm weather still exists; Doc Stark for his driving accomplishments, by season’s end he was classified 3rd from a group of 60! He thanked Alex Racz and his crew for the good job in prepping his racecar; Tim House for his son going on to college at St. Barbara City College; Norm Noble for his grandson going to Baylor in Waco, TX.

Past Pres Erv invited us all to take part in a bicycle ride on September 17 – more to come on this later.

Larry Duffield from Allstate Insurance and makes sure we are “in good hands” announced that Pauline Robin our new exchange student arrives Friday from south central France just in time to attend Saturday’s 5th Tuesday social at the Eckland residence.

Hugo Hughes from Bothell invited us all to the grand opening of 21 Acres August 26 from 4 to 7. The club years ago donated $25,000 to establish an annual educational program at 21 Acres. As a result, a $1200 check will be presented that evening right before the galloping gourmet Graham Kerr speaks.

Happy Birthday to Becky Clark and Alex Racz both of whom delighted us with their respective accounts of last year’s happenings.

Aided and abetted ably by Guest Prez Crimson Chris, Tim went for the marble to no avail and John Creason got away with a bag of coffee beans.

We all wonder if Max the Marbleman has lost his magic touch – no winning tickets for him lately.

Respectfully submitted by no other than me. Soon to be appointed club President-in-Training…but just “in training.”
