Tuesday
Be ready to register for Oktoberfest!
The Oktoberfest auction committee has set a July 26 goal for having all Rotary club
members registered
Online
for the October 8 event. Registered members will be asked to
encourage their guests to also register online or to have the
member handle that for them. Registration gurus Rorry Dunbar,
Becky Clark and Jay Fiske will provide computers at the July 12
and July 19 meetings for members to use and complete the
registration process themselves. The computers will have Internet
access, so the registrations done those morning will tell the
committee the member's food choices, email address, and give the
member the option of paying online for tickets or accepting an
invoice asking for a check payable to the Woodinville Rotary
Charitable Foundation.

Apologies to Max the Marble man:
We simply ran out of time at the
installation dinner to conduct the weekly raffle. Better luck July
19.
For each procured
auction item turned in at all future meetings through October 4,
the member bringing in either a silent or live auction item will receive
a ticket or tickets for the marble box drawing!

The Hugo Report for July, 2011
Previously Posted by Our Leader
for Erv's Worthy Subjects
This week we
introduce a new feature at Woodinville meetings -- The Guest
President. Newly-appointed special assistant to the President
(that would be Snappy Jarvis), will demonstrate the new role of
Guest President for Tuesday's meeting. This alone should be reason
enough not to oversleep on July 12. This "new feature", endorsed
by the immediate past president, will initially involve past
presidents of the club (Gary Whitsell is already practicing for
the July 19 meeting) but later on we'll give "presidential
wannabees"an opportunity to perform this important duty.

Rotary still seeks families
to host student due from France
How would you like a quick, fun way to learn
the French language? Woodinville Rotary Club has the answer.
The club is looking for families in the
Woodinville community, with students attending Woodinville High
School, who would consider hosting a young woman from France. The
club has hosted foreign high-school-age students the past 23
years.
The host family is asked to take the student
into their home for a three-to four-month period during the next
academic school year commencing in September.
“It’s a wonderful experience for our
Woodinville host students and families to not only pick up on
their French,” said Rotary youth exchange chair Larry Duffield,
“but a way to delve into a new culture and make lifelong, lasting
friendships.”
The next Rotary exchange student will arrive
in August for a yearlong experience, taking senior-level classes
at Woodinville High School. Rotarians are active in the program,
sharing their time, providing experiences, trips and events with
Rotary families, Duffield added.
Anyone interested in more details or in
becoming a host family should contact Larry at (206) 412-6643
or via email at
l.Duffield@comcast.net.

Housing for Wine Auction
Over the weekend,
members received an appeal from WSU to house viticulture and
enology students working at the annual Auction of Washington Wines
event in Woodinville. The request was from Thursday, August 18
through Sunday, August 21. If interested or for information,
please contact
lindsay.n.hicks@gmail.com. Lindsay is an intern working the
auction as well and can be reached at (360) 420-6353.
Rotary Community Park stewardship
| Many thanks to Susan Webster, Tom Quiqley and
Eric Greenwood who have taken on the first steps of
de-mildewing the boardwalk through the park. Susan will be
scheduling more evening power washing sessions and will be
in need of the able-bodied among us to complete that
important safety measure in the north sector of the
natural habitat. |

Homelessness Grant Approved by
District
New Generations Director Alex Hopkins
reports that Rotary District 5030 has approved our application for
a matching grant to assist in a homelessness project in Duvall for
mothers with children. The club's $2500 will be matched by a
special district fund made possible through a Gates Foundation
grant to the district for projects that contribute to eliminating
homelessness in the Puget Sound region. The grant will go to Acres
of Diamonds, whose executive director will provide details of
their work at our August 16 meeting.
We'll really be "sounding" off now
Under the guidance of "sound
expert" Gaylen Sauve, the club now poses a reasonably portable
sound system to be used at the Grange for morning meetings and "on
the go" at the many special events planned by the club in future
months -- picnic, crab feed, Brightwater Center, holiday party
etc. Gaylen promises the system will debut this week.
Got a beer stein to loan for
Oktoberfest?
Auction decor guru
Karen Funis has inquired:
"We're asking
the Rotarians if they have any ornate beer steins we could borrow
for the decor? We'd love to use the borrowed wine barrels again,
4 of them would be awesome." To help out, please contact Karen at

Woodinville museum opens July 16
After months and months of
fund-raising and dealing with the city, the Woodinville Heritage
Society will open its museum on Saturday, July 16, with an open
house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located in the historic DeYoung
family home landmark at 14121 NE 171st. St. Our club has been a
strong supporter of the project in financial contributions and
with public support within governmental circles. Congratulations
to the small band of history buffs who have brought this dream to
reality in preserving not only a community landmark but
Woodinville's colorful history. For a photo and more
information....Museum
Ribbon cutting at noon.
Board
to set full year's calendar for members' planning
This coming year, the club
will continue to hold a number of meetings apart from the Grange
sessions. As a result, the Board will be asked to approve a
calendar to be presented to each club member to help in making
plans for Rotary participation. As an example, the club will not
hold Tuesday meetings the day following a major Monday holiday:
Labor Day, President's Day, Memorial Day. Look for your calendar
after the July 19 board meeting.
SAVE the DATE
We have provided an electronic
SAVE the DATE document for members to forward or send. The plan is
for all registrations to be done electronically this year. Members
will be responsible for seeing that their guests are registered.
