Rotary Reporter - Susan Webster reporting

President Al Marsh, aka Sir Doc, did it “his way” Tuesday evening for the 24th annual Installation Dinner of the Woodinville Rotary Club.  Not only did he do it “his way”, he ushered in our new president, Erv DeSmet, aka Mr. Big.

Thanks to Rorry for the Invocation and Fred for the pledge, we all sat down for a delightful dinner at Willows Lodge.  Recognition to our Charter Members in attendance:  John Hughes, Marv Workman, Terry Jarvis and Daryl Eckland, our evening is picture perfect with a kick off by Joe Truglio announcing a new scholarship in the name of John B. Hughes.  Funded by a 2010 endowment, the new scholarship will be in place by 2012, giving honor to the Hughes Family in attendance.  This was certainly a well-deserved and timely tribute to the man who has done so much for our club.  A standing ovation from our members in attendance brought a touching moment to our own Mr. Hughes.

Paul Harris recipients
Sir Doc recounted his year from the moment he “met the queen” to the June dinner, highlighting the many events of note:  The August picnic at 21 Acres, Puttin’ on the Ritz, Operation Warm, the Holiday Party, the Rotary Cruise which raised $7000 for the Workman scholarship, Dictionaries for third graders, Rotary 1st Harvest, Food Lifeline, Adopt a Highway, the Scholarship Breakfast and Marble Mania.  President Al also announced new security measures in place for our sacred marble box.  There shall be no more disappearances of the white marble.

Paul Harris Fellowship awards this year went to Stacy Eckland, Al Marsh and Jorge Gonzales with more ovations and thanks for this awesome award spelling out Rotary pride.

The 2009-2010 board was given thanks and recognition along with a special recognition to Marilyn Marsh and Al’s professional partner in the Vet clinic who helped him serve his presidential duties for the club this year.

The gavel was passed to President Erv who announced his board for the 2010-11 year: vice president Joe Truglio; secretary Julian Denes; treasurer Mike Visse; president-elect Tana Baumler; directors Roger Stark, membership; Becky Clark, public relations; Rotary International Foundation Max Zellweger; Greg Riggs, club services; Steve Dolan, fund raising; and Pam Johnstone, administration.

The new president, Erv, recounted his four international conferences:  Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Chicago and Montreal and how meaningful they have all been to him.  Moved by Polio Plus and the good works of Rotary world wide, he places a special emphasis on the 4 Way Test and how we can put this into place each and everyday of our Rotary lives.

The theme of the New Year:  “Let’s do something meaningful together” for we’re all going down the river…together.

Bring your kazoo’s to the meeting on July 6th and be ready to rock his world.
