Memberships proposed:  The Board has extended  invitations of membership to Don Whitwam and Jeff Lair,  residents of Woodinville, proposed by sponsors Alex Hopkins and  David Landau. Jeff is active with a charity in Mexico, Push International. His classification proposal is commercial interiors. Don's classification is yacht sales. This is the official notice of proposed membership as is the club's policy. Members with questions relative to this proposed membership should contact the president, the proposed member's sponsor or Secretary Roger Martindill.
Projects you'll be hearing more about: The club leadership will soon be asking members to join in exploration of helping organize an Interact club at Secondary Academy for Success next school year....to learn more about Josh the Otter, a water safety awareness program for pre-school and kindergarten age children and their parents.....and to help with a major cleanup work project on the trail system through Rotary Community Park.
Board proposes adding director: Members have been notified of plans to vote at the June 21 meeting on an amendment to the club bylaws that would permit the addition of a seventh, appointed director to serve on the club Board of Directors. The director position would be New Generations Director which would encompass the fifth avenue of Rotary service to include youth exchange, Interact, Rotaract and the Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly. If approved by two-thirds of members attending the June 21 meeting, incoming president John Hughes will ask Alex Hopkins to accept appointment to that position. The Board would then consist of six elected officers and seven appointed directors.
Auction Procurement! Let's get on it. Auction item procurement is of major concern to the Oktoberfest committee. The committee will meet June 22 at 5:30 at Rorry Dunbar's conference room to discuss plans for the October 8 event and to encourage members to help fill Meydenbauer Center with bidders anxious to support our focus of education, literacy and scholarships.

Marble man must choose: Max Zellweger surprised everyone attending the June 7 meeting by not winning the chance to draw for the white marble. Unaccustomed as he was, nevertheless, he was able to choose a suitable prize of Cougar Gold cheese.

Delivering hope to Sudan

Lake Forest Park Rotarian Craig Sternagle relates his story of the "Lost Boy" of Sudan who found his way to this country to attend high school. With a divided Sudan presently in the international spotlight, Tuesday's June 14 program couldn't be more timely.

This from the June 2009 issue of the Rotarian magazine:

"Several years ago, Craig Sternagel met former “Lost Boy” Thuch Malual-Deng, who trekked 1,000 miles to Ethiopia and Kenya with his brother, 7, and thousands of other young boys, to escape the bloodshed and conscription as a child soldier. Sternagel, a member of the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park, Wash., was searching for a personal challenge and a cause. He found both in Malual-Deng, who had made his way to Washington and attended high school with Sternagel’s son, Colin.

To raise funds for Malual-Deng’s village, Sternagel biked across the United States, netting $12,000. He decided to travel to South Sudan to establish reliable local contacts (there are no Rotary clubs there), purchase and deliver supplies rather than shipping them, and assess other needs."

We will learn about a Lost Boy who became a Rotarian, as did those who read this fascinating story in the Rotarian magazine.

Having one of our Cascadia student scholarship recipients talk to us about what a difference it makes to get a helping hand when it is needed is inspirational, as it should be. Mike Merritt’s story is a good one with a happy ending and getting happier.  What a great guy with a great plan on helping make the world better.

Steven Solomon (right photo) from the Rotary Foundation gave what some members called the best and clearest presentation ever on the Rotary Foundation, how it works and what it has done.  Steven spent time with Max at the meeting, and Max was able to get some important and valuable info on how he and future club Foundation chairs can get accurate and helpful info.

Miro---what a busy guy.  It is always great to hear from Miro and learn of his many adventures in the US of A, and recently in our northerly neighbor, Canada.

Remember, the induction dinner is coming up shortly.  Get your bottles of wine to Daryl.  Do not store them in your trunk as Chris Boland mentioned he was doing!!!  I hope all of you can make that event.  You will have a chance to meet my oldest granddaughter, the great Brooke DeSmet and her daddy Matt.  I asked them to attend. I remember when Joe Truglio was Pres and had invited some of his family members as other Presidents have done, including Al last year.  Anyway,  hope you can make that event. Always a good one at Willows Lodge.

 Charitable Giving Focus

Rotarians of Woodinville believe that providing a pathway for Woodinville's youth to obtain an education represents our opportunity to live "Service Above Self".

The club provides direct funding to programs from grade  school through college...new Operation Warm coats for young children in need, brand new dictionaries for every third grader, summer reading camps at Kokanee and Woodmoor elementary schools, music and academic opportunities at the Secondary Academy for Success (SAS), a pilot project at Woodinville High School for peer-to-peer math tutoring, and renewable scholarships for Woodinville High School and SAS graduates where it will "make the difference" between affording and attending college.
