Rotary Reporter - Erv DeSmet

“Hydros racing up the slough were King”

President Al Marsh opened the meeting.

Following the flag salute, John Hughes read an incredibly inspiring invocation with the help of a carefully selected Club member.

 (see below for invocation team)

Chris Boland showed his maturity as a song leader by selecting “Yankee Doodle” for his song.  Many members were stunned at how well everyone sang that song.

Our speaker was none other than “Sideline Smitty.”  He is also known in regular life as Craig Smith.  Craig gave a very interesting history of our area.  He talked about the 1960's when hydros were king.  There were no other pro-sports in town.  He said that Woodinville was very strictly agricultural in those days.  He has seen lots of changes, obviously.

Craig talked about Bothell High School sports.  He thanked our Club for our support in the area of giving scholarships to students in the district.

He also talked about the many changes that he sees in journalism.  He said he laments the fact that there is a lack of cooperation in today’s world.

Then George Selg reported on the status of the new Pop Keeney electronic scoreboard upgrade.  He thanked our Club for our support of that wonderful project.

Principal Puckett mentioned that she could arrange this fall for a Rotary Night at Pop Keeney field so that we could all observe the new scoreboard in action.

There was a discussion regarding the proposed Bylaws.  A motion was made to adopt the proposed Bylaws changes except for Section 13a which deals with membership and the rule of 85.  The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Club Service Announcements.  Joe Truglio reported on the dictionary project.  He also mentioned the Rotary First Harvest work party coming up this weekend.

Alex Hopkins reported on the Youth Services activities.  He mentioned news about RYLA and DECA.

Fifth Tuesday.  Our next Fifth Tuesday function will be March 23, 2010 at DeLille Cellars.  We have arranged for our square dance caller, and he will not charge anything for acting as our square dance caller.  Reports are also coming in that the incredibly talented line dancer “Bronco” will make an appearance and will also do so at no charge.  This is an incredible break for our Club, and I am sure that the Fifth Tuesday event will be quite memorable.

The Sergeant at Arms did a fine job, as usual.  A highlight of this part of the program was revelations regarding Bob Rosso and his dolphin shorts.

Raffle.  Terry Jarvis had crinkled up his raffle tickets, and, yes, one of his tickets was selected.  Mr. Jarvis hand-picked a group of assistants.  Given all of this build-up, Mr. Jarvis was still unable to obtain the white marble, even using his hand-selected marble picker.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED this 9th day of February, 2010.

Apparently it takes a village to find a $742 white marble....no luck again, though.
