President Al called the meeting to order and noted that he was not
Henny Youngman, a long deceased comedian, which was a reference to
content in the Weekly Newsletter…that totally escaped this reporter.
Terry Jarvis led the pledge which was followed by a thoughtful
innovation that was written and offered by Jon Bylin.
Songmeister Boland called the entire entourage of UW Husky Alumni
front and center to sing the Husky fight song.
The entire crew, other than Marv Workman could only mumble
“Bow Down to Washington” and were unable to recall the entire verse.
It was later proven that the former UW students spent more
time in the library as the WSU Alumni were able to belt out the
Cougar fight song due to their devotion to singing in the beer halls
of Moscow, Idaho.
At this point, Sergeant at Harm, Larry Leonardson, esq. interrupted
the proceedings to levy fines on Julian Denes, esq. for perpetually
leaving early which demonstrated that there is no “professional
courtesy” for Rotary infractions between lawyers.
Craig Hendrickson, husband of Linda Hendrickson, and CEO of Overake
Hospital provided an overview of the progress of the hospital since
he became chief executive in 2001.
He noted that there has been a serious concentration on
raising the bar in patient standards and service excellence.
The focus on improving patient delivery stems from the mission
statement of Overlake Hospital which is to
“Provide Medical Excellence
Every Day.” This statement drives a “relentless pursuit of
quality to exceed patient and family expectations.”
The primary services where outlined as including Cardiac care, which
was pioneered by Rotary’s Dr. Roger Stark.
Overlake now performs 400 open heart procedures and over 600
cardiac interventions each year. It was noted that Overlake will
become the first medical center to utilize robotic surgical tools in
early 2010.
The Hospital is also noted for its preeminence in its Child Birthing
Center as well as Cancer treatment where it is now part of the
Cancer Care Alliance.
Lastly it was reported that the Emergency Trauma Center was now the
backup to Harborview as a designated Level 3 provider of emergency
services.
Craig emphasized the importance of creating a culture of patient
centered care as being a dominating factor in creating the Overlake
difference which was described as “Caring for Our Community by
Caring for You.”
Margie Coy was introduced as Woodinville Rotary’s newest member and
was given the “red badge.” Margie is a Rotarian who has migrated to
Woodinville from the Duvall club.
Alex Hopkins, Vocational chair, announced that October is Rotary’s
vocational month which would be headlined by classification talks
during the month. Carolyn Nilsson Troy from the WSU School of Viticulture and Enology, which is supported by student scholarships from Woodinville Rotary, provided an update on the school. It was noted that Thomas Henick-Kling, PhD, has recently joined the faculty to focus on research to help the Washington State wine industry become the best in the world. She asked for our support for housing 18 students who will be in the Woodinville area in January to tour the Woodinville wineries and help with a fundraiser.
David Landau noted that Landau
Catering and the Maltby Café were in the running for the “Best of
Washington” contest and urged member support by voting “early and
often.” David also won
the opportunity to win the marble raffle but could not locate the
Duck green marble.
Following further fines and
Happy Dollars, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Eric Greenwood, Rotary
Reporter
Visualize the marble winnings still unclaimed, despite gallant try by David Landau.
