Club will help team's work in Peru:
The Board has voted a $2,500
donation to Willamette Medical Teams to cover a
shortfall in medicine supplies for its November trip to
rural outposts in Peru. Rorry Dunbar
brought the need to the club and the board will use a
portion of unallocated international budget funds that
are part of the 2009 charitable giving plan. The plan is
based on the results of our 2008 Wine'n Shine
fund-raiser. The team of 15 provides medical assistance
to impoverished communities in Latin America and the
fifth year's trip will be to Cusco, Peru. The 5-day
clinic involves three doctors, four nurses and a
host of interested volunteers. The club's financial help
will again make it possible for the team to take a full
pharmacy of medicines into the country to be dispensed
during the clinic's work or donated to the Red Cross in
Cusco.
More dollars for Village Volunteers :
The Board also voted international
funds for the Village Volunteers water filter project in
Kiminini, Kenya. A well was dug recently on the
grounds where Village Volunteers will construct a water
filter manufacturing and assembling plan. Woodinville
Rotary will donate $2,000 to provide running water to
the plant where the ceramic pottery work will be done.
The Volunteers had planned to rely on ground water being
collected and delivered in buckets via bicycles. An
additional $1,500 was needed to enclose a corner of the
building for a lab and office space that can be isolated
from the dusty conditions of the pottery operation.
Project coordinator Bill Austin plans to travel to Kenya
near the end of the year to oversee the startup of
production and the development of a sales and
distribution program for the $15, life-saving ceramic
filter systems.
Scholarship winner :
The recipient of the 2009-2010
Jerry Wilmot Masters of Business scholarship at UW
Bothell has been selected. He is Randy Eastwood,
a resident of Kenmore who served the city of Kenmore as
its mayor the past two years. Randy will enter the
leadership program. One of six siblings and the father
of four children, Randy has the opportunity to become
the first in the family to earn a degree above that of
associate degree. Jerry Wilmot was a charter member and
past president of our club who was active in the
Woodinville community's planning and incorporation
efforts. At the time of his death from Lou Gehrig's
disease, Jerry was president of Molbak's. Participating
in the selection process was Egon Molbak, retired
founder of the company.
Public office seekers :
Two Club members are candidates
for public offices in the upcoming November 3
non-partisan general election. In King County this
November, the election will be carried out entirely by
mail ballot. Todd Banks is a candidate
for Northshore School Board and Becky Clark
is a candidate for position 5 of the Woodinville Fire
and Life Safety District board of commissioners.
