News
on Polio Plus Front --The Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation said it will award a
$255 million challenge grant to Rotary
International in an effort to fight polio.
As
part of the deal, the Evanston Ill.-based Rotary group
will raise $100 million from its members over the next
three years.
Also,
the governments of the United Kingdom and Germany are
giving another $280 million to the Global Polio
Eradication Initiative over the next five years.
“Rotarians,
government leaders, and health professionals have made a
phenomenal commitment so polio afflicts only a small
number of the world’s children,” said Bill Gates,
co-chair of the Gates Foundation, in a statement.
In
November 2007, the Seattle-based Gates Foundation and
Rotary made a similar grant, when Rotary agreed to
match a $100 million foundation grant dollar-for-dollar. --

Woodinville
Sports
Fields
Update
|
During the firesides, a number of members have
inquired about the status of the proposed Woodinville Sports
Fields project and the club's position in providing
financial support. For those who do not receive or
frequently find copies of the Woodinville Weekly,
below is an excerpt from an article in the January 19
edition covering the city manager's "state of the
city".
(City Manager Richard) Leahy cited the issue of the proposed
sports fields adjacent to City Hall, a project the Council
will focus on beginning in February, to determine whether or
not its construction is feasible at this time.
"The budget we presented to
them indicated we would have insufficient capital to build
it," he said. "If current conditions improve, we
may be able to do it, but if they stay bad for a prolonged
period we won't be able to build the field and operate it
within the two-year budget."
"It's an issue that our
elected leadership is struggling with," he said.
"Part of the problem is what we'd have to do with our
Public Works operation, which is right next door while the
thing is being built. Will our big rigs be able to come and
go to do their jobs? Right now we don't know."
The project, he said, will cost
about $7 million and presently faces a $2 million shortfall,
excluding operation costs once the facility is up and
running.
"We're giving them some
options," Leahy said. "maybe we go from the
high-end artificial turf to the second or third level turf.
Maybe we put lights through in another budget phase. Maybe
they take funds from another project -- it's up to them (the
Council). And then there's the cost of operating it."
Through King County's budget, he
said, the Northshore Youth Soccer Association will kick in a
half million dollars in support, with another half million
promised to arrive from private contributors, and more
dollars will come from park impact fees.
"But we have a shortfall and
we're trying to figure out how to make up that
balance," he said.
