Becky Clark Reporting The
Woodinville Fight Song (albeit a little weak), opened the
Tuesday, November 18th meeting of Woodinville Rotarians.
It was “Show Your Colors Day”, much to the dismay of those
who forgot and much to the dismay of those sporting Pacific Northwest
colors, namely Crimson and Gray and Purple and Gold. After
introduction of guests Linda Fuhrman and Elna Duffield, Francia told the
tale of her week which included a stint at the local fire station as a
guest of Chief “What’s His Name” and an opportunity to wear a
“costume”. Rumor has it that Francia was found driving the back end of
the ladder truck. She also
spent an evening at the Space Needle, got to watch Principal Vicki
Puckett cut her locks at assembly and flew to Friday Harbor with host
John Abbott. The remainder
of the week was spent sleeping. President
Boland announced that nominations are still open for 2009 Club officers.
Roger Martindill then reported on the polio presentation by Penny
LeGate at the Rotary Club of Kirkland.
He noted that although polio was nearly eradicated it is now
making a come back due to Nigeria shutting down the immunization process
because of political and religious reasons.
It is now the case that the oral vaccine is less effective than
it was previously and the injections are the only way to effectively
attack polio. Eric
Greenwood reminded us that the annual Holiday Party will be held at
Monte Villa Farmhouse on Tuesday (of course), December 2nd,
beginning at 6:00 p.m. Doc
Roger Stark and his group will be providing the musical entertainment. Birthday
wishes were extended to John Creason who reported that he has enjoyed a
good year; business is growing at about 20% and his son is doing well in
school. At
that point, Master of Ceremonies for Show Your Colors Day, Erv DeSmet
took control (after a fashion – no pun intended) of the meeting.
MOC DeSmet ethically took himself out of the competition as he
claims he is on loan from the Executive Program for the Institute of
Fight Song competitions. For
this ceremony only, the Four Way Test was suspended.
MOC DeSmet also announced the judges as John Creason, Karen
McDonald and Rohit Kumar.
The prizes for the best of show were fresh cinnamon rolls from
the infamous (famous?) Maltby Café.
After many hilarious and not so hilarious presentations, Jon
Bylin was named for Best Song, Prez Boland was named for Best Emotional
and Susan Webster was named for Best Costume.
A new category was created; Best Education, naming John Hughes as
the winner of that category. Judge
Rohit wisely chose not to wear his Trojan colors. Sergeant
at Harms, Tana Baumler (covering for Baab), extracted $1.00 for everyone
who neglected to wear their colors.
She had quite a haul. Due
to the heavy fines involved, there was the usual discussion regarding
the validity of the “good” vs. “bad” fine waivers.
Elna Duffield offered raffle tickets to the fundraiser featuring
21 decorated trees at the Olympic Hotel, Prez Boland noted that Gary
Whitsell has not missed a UW game since the 1980’s (until recently)
and Vicki Puckett related the tale of her diminished locks.
Chief Johnson aka What’s His Name, offered a Happy Dollar for
the fact that dinner at the firehouse (value $300), sold for $1,650 at
the recent Medic One auction. With a reminder to remember to attend the music event at Hollywood Schoolhouse on Thursday, December 4th at 6:00, the meeting was adjourned.
