Art Haines Reporting

The turn out was amazing.  The lines were long.  The crowds were enthusiastic.  Anticipation was in the air.

This was the Election Day scene at Woodinville Rotary, November 4.  No mail in absentee attendees on this day when an extra table was required to accommodate all.

The theme for the day was higher education, an appropriate topic for election day.  Joining us were Charlotte Evans, recipient of the Woodinville Rotary Club Teacher Certification Scholarship and Mike Clarke, recipient of the Jerry Wilmot Business Management Scholarship.  A native of Eugene, Or., Charlotte shared her plans to teach elementary school in a low income area.  Mike, for reasons known only to Steve and Bob, is looking to leave the lumber business and use his new MBA in the (oh no!) management consulting field. He is in his second year of the program, making the career change following 20 years in the lumber product distribution business.

Richard Penny

The day’s main attraction was a presentation on UW Bothell progress from Richard Penny, the new Vice Chancellor for Advancement.  Richard for some reason he did not explain is a member of the Bellevue Rotary.  He reviewed the current environment for education, which in Washington is challenged by ever-increasing demand in a weak economy and among the lowest funded in the country.

Richard reported that UWB is the fastest growing UW campus in the sate with a 23% growth rate over the past year.  Currently UWB serves 2200 students and is slated to grow to 5000 students by 2018.  By 2020, the combined enrollment of UWB and Cascadia Community College should reach over 10,000 students.  UWB is also quickly developing new academic programs with an emphasis on new science and technology programs.  In the coming academic year UWB will go from offering 6 majors to 20.

The Bothell contingent of the club was heartened to hear that the $50 million interchange was ahead of schedule and should be completed by the Fall of 2009.  Hooray!

This is but a sample of Richard’s upbeat report on UWB.  He received a landslide of applause from the club in recognition of a job well done.

Bits and Pieces:

·        Welcome to Pam Johnstone as a new full member!

·        Larry Duffield is looking for 10th graders who are interested in the Rotary Youth exchange to foreign county.  Candidates should be referred to Larry by December 1.

·        Art reminded members that early, discounted registration for the May 1-3 Rotary District 5030 Conference in Victoria ends November 31.  Go to the www.rotary5030.org to register and save some $$$$.

Joe Truglio announced a final contribution to the Marv Workman Scholarship fund from the August Cruisin with Marv Alaska cruise bringing  the total to over $9,000.00!  Gary and Donna Whitsell kicked in another $500 as a consolation for not being able to go.  Way to go!

(Editor's Note:  The contributions brings the Workman Business Scholarship Endowment to more than $21,000 toward the goal of $35,000 to be raised to ensure the scholarship will eventually be self-funding through the Northshore Scholarship Foundation.)
