Maltby Bill Schink reporting President Boland called the Woodinville Rotary Club
Tuesday morning meeting to order promptly at 7:30AM. Vicki led us in the
salute to the Flag, Bill Gowin gave the innovation, and the musical duo
of Vicki and Al led us in singing the Star Spangled Banner. The program speaker was Patrick Tefft, the City of
Woodinville coordinator for the volunteer program. His topic was the City of Woodinville Volunteer Program which included an
Overview with a focus on the Rotary Community Park. The number of city
volunteers has steadily increased over the last few years reaching a
record 1,119 for 2007. The Woodinville Rotary Club's $90,000 donation to
the Rotary Community Park project was instrumental to the park's
success. The project started in 2003 and has completed its 3 major
construction phases --Skate Park, Playground/Pavilion, and Boardwalk
Trail. The work remaining involves cleaning and planting and
establishing a Rotary Park section steward program to ensure a quarterly
maintenance program. Patrick described an Eagle Scout project for
habitat restoration (cleaning and planting) - eliminate invasive growth
and replace with native vegetation. In 2007, two of these projects were
completed and in 2008 two were completed with three more underway. Eagle
Scout candidate Danny Soloff will undertake a section project to clean-out evasive
plants and restore with native-plants and is seeking volunteers from
Rotary.
John Hughes, representing the G.G.WAS (Greater Grace Wine Appreciation Society) along with Erv and Max, recognized two ladies that have made significant contributions to Rotary. Catherine Jones, was given a $1,500 scholarship for her Masters Program in Viticulture at Washington State University. Catherine has been a dedicated volunteer, ensuring high quality Pinot Noir from the Grace Vineyards and helping establish our second vineyard at Molbak's Plant Farm south of the Grange Hall. Leigh Henderson, owner of Alexa's cafe in Bothell, Monte Villa Farmhouse and Alexa's Garden Cafe in Ballard, was honored for her support of Rotary wine/viticulture programs and was presented the first Bacchus Award and a bouquet of roses. Leigh has donated the Monte Villa Farmhouse for fund-raising dinners as well as our annual Holiday Parties in December. Thank you both for your SUPPORT and FRIENDSHIP.
Several announcements were made: John Abbott back
from an African safari circulating teaser photos promoting an upcoming
program on his trip; John Hughes summarized the proposed new
by-laws for the Woodinville Rotary Foundation and the by-laws were
approved by voice vote; and, Jorge Gonzalez stressed the need for
live auction procurement items particularly unique experiences, trips
and dinners and to start working on silent auction items. Also, make
sure your calendar has the August 9 pig roast at the Gordy Green farm
and the September 18 golf tournament at the Inglewood Country Club. Congratulations to Terry Jarvis and Joe Truglio on their July birthdays, in fact, both were born on the same day (the 19th). Life is going great for both. The raffle had six items including 2 bottles of wine and one bottle of beer plus the white marble draw. Bill Gowin drew for the white marble, but was disappointed.
Other raffle item winners were John
Creason, Rorry Dunbar, Al Marsh, Charlie Russell, Daryl Eckland and
Ken Kirkpatrick. President Boland closed the meeting a little late due to
the very full program.
