Susan Webster, Starr Reporting

John Cantwell was the designated speaker on Tuesday, June 2 at a Rotary Full House.

Tara Theisen and Jonathan Hwa of FBLA

Adriane Biddle and Janelle Lottenville of DECA

Among the visitors and guests were WHS students representing FBLA and DECA -  where the club presented $500 checks for the student clubs to go towards their state and national competitions.

Principal Angela Kerr and her staff from Kokanee Elementary Summer Reading Camp Program presented and received a significant check of $5000 from the club for their stellar efforts to improve literacy.

In a note to our Rotary Newsletter, Angela says: "We are so excited for the opportunity to serve our students who need a bit of extra help right now.  This will make a difference for them.  Thank you, thank you!"

Also, Becky Bishop and top dog from Reading with Rover greeted the club and received a $2500 check also for literacy efforts. We also heard from a Rotary Student Ambassador hopeful, Sasha Anderson, who was introduced by Larry Duffield.

Birthday Boys: Steve Dolan, Bill Gowin and Evan McAllister were honored with a club rendition of Happy Birthday.

The speaker, John Cantwell of Redmond, talked to the club about Nutrition and Health.  The UW and Bastyr graduate educated the club about the importance of nutrition in maintaining health to prevent disease.  Among the five factors of health: exercise, rest, stabilizing mobility, decreasing toxins and increased nutrition, the physician focused his discussion on the importance of an adequate and balanced nutrition.  Balanced nutrition being a key concept in the state of optimum health through the macro (carbs, fats, proteins) and micro (vitamins and minerals) nutrients.

Taking a different approach from traditional medicine to a more alternative approach, the nutritionist works to promote health and wellness through the support and restoration of health via diet and nutrition.  Supporting normal cell membranes to eliminate cancer with omega 3's and fatty acids to stimulate the immune system using Echinacea and thymus gland extract to decrease treatment times and increase health.  The nutritionist also looks at diet, weaknesses and strengths for a better balance of health.  The education process being key to promote and educate the importance of nutrition in one's overall health.  Questions from the club were centered around current Vitamin D research and water.
