Chris Boland called the meeting to order at 7:30am, with visiting Rotarian Norm Noble of the Sun Lakes, Arizona Rotary Club leading us in the Salute to the Flag, the Innovation given by Bill Schink and the normal sing-along cancelled to celebrate Julian Denes’ Birthday.   Roger Stack introduced the guests, who included Norm Noble; Eric Barnum, Music Project Board Member and President of Northshore Scholarship Foundation; Dave Meuhleisen, Education Director, and Gretchen Garth, President of 21 Acres, and Stacie Eckland, representing her husband.

The program for the morning was a full, interesting and informative:

·             Update on the Northshore Scholarship Foundation – John Hughes (someone yelled “Go Vandals")

·             21 Acres Education Program – Gretchen Garth and Dave Meuhleisen

·             Audience Development – Dennis Johnson and the Ritz Review Dancers

Northshore Scholarship  Foundation – John Hughes

After being introduced by a renowned journalist, John Hughes provided an update on the Northshore Scholarship Foundation which is celebrating its 25th Anniverstiy.  The Foundation was formed in 1984 by the Northshore Rotary Club, subsequently joined by the Northshore Kiwanis and Woodinville Rotary clubs.  From its meager beginnings with asset of $5,661 the partnership has grown this to over $1 millon.  In 25 years, total contributions were $1,538K and distributed 1,287 scholarships worth $1,565K. At the May 19 Scholarship Breakfast (outstanding turnout by the Woodinville Rotarians), the Foundation distributed $158K to 76 recipients.  Other recent events include Rotary donating $40,000 for 16 students in 2009/10, granted 3 make-a-difference $6,000 scholarships to Lindsey Guay, Sarah Lanter and Jaclyn Smith and establishment of an Endowment for 21 Acres’ Education Program.  Future Foundation Goals include:

·        Catch up with rising tuition cost

·        Increase endowments from $25K to $35K

·        Grant more renewable scholarships

·        Encourage new Endowments

·        Increase minimum grant from $ 1.5K  to $2K

21 Acres  --  Gretchen Garth & Dave Meuhleisen

21 Acres is breaking ground on a new facility, Phase I /East Wing of 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living that will feature a year-round farmers market, community kitchen, publicly available classroom space and a 50 kW PV solar panel array. The 8,500 square foot East Wing of the Center will be a community venue for education on farming, sustainable living, and energy and water saving systems – a very Green building.  They thanked Rotary for the Educational Endowment and Cascadia Community College volunteers working  at 21 Acres.  Scholarship Foundation trustees Steve Dolan and Becky Clark presented Gretchen with $1,500 and expressed our thanks for their contributions to the community.

Audience Development – Larry Leonardson & the Ritz Review Dancers

With a spectacular entrance, the elegantly attired Mr. Leonardson and the energetic Ritz Dancers (the beautiful and talented Pam, Francia, Linda, Kathy, Becky) kicked off Audience Development for the Wine”N Shine Charity Dinner Show and Auction.  The group displayed their dancing agility as an introduction to Larry.

Larry set the stage by saying that this year’s auction theme is Puttin’on the Ritz, our focus is Kids & Education/Literacy and we need to raise about $200,000.  His message was that we have one annual fundraiser (October 10, 2009) that will require a large audience, ready to bid in order to support our beneficiaries.  Although many of us dislike asking people to attend, remember people like to be involved and now is the time to start asking.  An easy way to get involved is to be a “Table Captain” committing to buy/fill a table ($1,250/table) and get your invitees to pay.  A “Table Captain” sign-up board magically appeared and we got commitments for 15 tables, almost half way to our goal.  The concept of co-captain was discussed where 2 people would commit to fill a table.

Al Marsh announced that at the recent District 5030 Assembly the Woodinville Rotary Club was presented with the Club Presidential Citation; Al presented the Citation to Club Prez Chris.  The Citation is RI’s recognition of the Club’s achievement of Goals.

Stacie Eckland and Eric Greenwood urged those members who haven’t signed up for the July 7 Installation Dinner to do so ASAP.  Also, those who haven’t supplied a bottle of wine were fined and urged to bring a bottle next week or be fined again.

The Club sang happy birthday to Kathy Kill who has had good year despite the recession.

Happy $$’s Included:

Stacie Eckland – second son graduated from dental school --what a relief.

Dennis Johnson – Becky Clark has agreed to run for Fire Commission Position #5 – go Becky

Gordy Green – Congratulated Eric Greenwood on completing a 40-mile bike ride – I am envious

John Abbott – 25th wedding anniversary -- Congratulations

Greg Riggs – 4th son graduates from high school -- Congratulations

Becky Clark – daughter Morgan Grace graduated from WSU-- Congratulations

The marble draw was worth $214 but unfortunately Kathy Kill was unsuccessful in drawing the winning Green marble.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35am, a little late but understandable given the outstanding programs presented today.

Important Reminders

·        Bring a bottle of wine next week for the Installation Dinner and avoid the fine.

·        Joint Meeting of Outgoing, Incoming Officers and Directors June 16 at DeLille

·        Get those Auction Item Procurement Forms turned in—a large, high bidding audience needs a large number of auction items to bid on.
