Rotary
to support first summer
reading camp at Woodmoor elementary
The club board of officers and directors has voted to expand
Woodinville Rotary support of summer reading programs --
adding Woodmoor in the summer of 2009 with a $5,000 grant.
The grant matches the club's continuing $5000 support of the
long-standing Kokanee elementary.
The additional support is possible within the 2009
charitable giving plan. A total of $3000 of the funds will
come from unclaimed scholarships in 2001 and 2002, the money
having then been transferred to the Northshore Scholarship
Foundation for distribution. The remaining $2,000 will come
from a readjustment of funding for international projects
still to be determined for 2009. The decision was made via
electronic vote of the Board, a new feature of the club's
bylaws adopted last December.
Club services director Joe Truglio reports, " As many
of you know, I have been in contact with Angela Kerr, who
was the principal at Kokanee and now is the principal at
Woodmoor and Cheryl McNees who ran the Kokanee Summer
Reading Program, is now planning to start a summer reading
program at Woodmoor.
"
"The
reading camp at Kokanee, over the years, has helped hundreds
of children that needed that extra help in achieving reading
skills that brought them up to their class reading levels.
·
"The expansion to
Woodmoor this summer will also accomplish the same as has
been enjoyed at Kokanee. This first year it will
embrace 30 of the most deserving children and hopefully grow
from there."
FYI:
Woodinville Rotary first supported a summer reading program
in 1999 in the amount of $14,000 when Kokanee elementary
school lost a matching federal grant necessary to fund
teachers for the two-week program.
Triple
Door Benefit, All Aboard:
The club's
Fun & Frolic Committee has lined up a luxury motorcoach
to transport Rotarians to and fro the "Vegas
Evening" benefit on May 26 at the Triple Door nightclub
in downtown Seattle. The benefit features Bernadette Bascom
and the voices of SAS with Vegas entertainers Sonny Turner
of The Platters and Theo Peoples of The Four Tops. We'll
have sign up sheets at Tuesday's meeting. Space is limited
so get your name on the list if you plan to attend and find
the convenience and camaraderie of a luxurious ride to 2nd
and Union to your liking. Avoid parking problems and costs.
Departure location to be determined. DETAILS:
Cost is $75 per person with $50 going directly to The
Music Project Foundation and $25 for transportation and for
dessert on board the return trip. Departs at 5 p.m. Tickets
will be charged to member's club accounts. Those
attending will have the opportunity to choose beverage and
food at the Triple Door. The menu is from the popular Wild
Ginger restaurant located above the nightclub but served at
your table. Payment for food and beverage orders prior to
and during the 7 p.m. show are up to each individual
attending. An
elegant dessert reminiscent of Earth Day Dinner 2009 will be
served with beverage on the return motorcoach trip.
Breakfast
Volunteers Needed: Be
prepared to volunteer for helping with the 25th annual
scholarship recognition breakfast May 19 at the Northshore
Senior Center in Bothell. Woodinville Rotary will again
shoulder the duties of serving the continental breakfast to
scholarship recipients, family members and Rotarians and
Kiwanians who will be attending. Tana Baumler will be
coordinating our participation and asking for volunteers.
David and Mary Jane Landau will be catering.
| Thanx
Cathi, John, Carol and Rick: The
club extends sincere appreciation to John and Cathi Abbott
and to Rick Pisani and Carol Van Haelst for their generosity
in hosting our exchange student Francia during this Rotary
year of 2008-09. Francia is enjoying getting acquainted with
the Dunbar family for the balance of her stay with us. Larry
Duffield is scouting for one more family to host our student
from Switzerland who will arrive in August for the Rotary
year of 2009-2010. |

Frequently
asked: The
name of our club's annual charity fund-raising event
is "Wine'n Shine" and the theme for the
19th event on October 10 will be "Puttin' on the
Ritz" featuring a decoration setting and suggested
attire of that era! Procurement anyone? Fill a table anyone?
Steering committee meets Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
this week at Rorry Dunbar's. Since our first event -- an
auction and golf tournament in 1990 -- Woodinville Rotary
has supported Rotary International causes and given back to
our community a total of $1,759,808.
