Jorge Gonzalez reporting

The meeting today was very much like any other Tuesday meeting, members and guests began arriving as they normally do, some early, most on time, and two really really late, the mood was as always upbeat, cheerful and respectful. Food of course consisted of cold plates and cold cutlery, fruit, pastries, oatmeal, eggs A la Grange, potatoes, bacon and sausages. After breakfast we participated in the Flag salute, a prayer, and sang Take Me Out to the Ball Game, appropriate for the season.

SUM 09 smlFor the first part of the meeting’s program Joe Truglio introduced Pete Morris, Brad Norton, and Lou Ann Jackmann of the Northshore YMCA. Brad took to the podium to talk about the many programs that the YMCA has for kids and young adults in our communities, the tremendous need out there to assist with meals, afterschool education, scholarships and in many other areas of need, and how our club’s contribution ($2,500) helps them achieve their goals.

The second part of the program was dedicated to the charity event in October. Eric Greenwood talked about what it takes to make this a successful event and asked each committee lead person to explain what their individual committee is about. The goal was to gather volunteers for the different groups prior, during and after the event. It is apparent that the businesslike approach that Eric has been instrumental in implementing is beginning to pay dividends and promises the success of this and future year’s events. logoHugo took the opportunity to introduce his guest Jerry Bannister, a Northshore Kiwanis member who is donating for our event a custom made 240 sq ft deck valued at $6,000.

Rotaryville Roger introduced the club’s newest member Alex Racz. Throughout the years the club has welcomed many new members and each “induction” is of course special, however listening to Roger describe Rotary and what Rotary stands for made this one unique. We are fortunate to have Alex as a new member; he has Rotary in his blood going back to his father who founded two clubs in Hungry, he  is a man of many talents, and knows how to make a carburetor work.

As I took notes of the meeting and listened to Pete Morris talk about the YMCA, to our members talk about the charity event, to Roger and Alex, and to Jerry making his generous donation I realized how much better this world is because of people like them and people at organizations such as ours, and Rotary in general, and the many people at foundations and not for profit organizations that work so hard to improve the quality of life throughout the world. Imagine what it would be like if more people were involved. Imagine what it would be like if more people knew.

We celebrated the birthdays of Greg Riggs and Karen McDonald, no one picked the marble that was worth as much as anything these days in the stock market, and some lucky winners took off with a hat, a mug and Cougar cheese.

Respectfully submitted on a nice, rare spring warm and sunny day in Rotaryville.

Whitsell groped for purple marble, assuming our Prez
would actually include a purple sphere in the marble box.
