Art Haines reporting

The Boland era as president opened this morning with a hearty “Good Morning!”  Not one to rock the boat, Chris opened the meeting with the flag salute and invocation.  All the conservatives in the room heaved a collective sigh of relief.  Rotary as we know it was safe.

Maestro Al Marsh led us in a nice, low key (very low key) rendition of Summer Time.  Perhaps this will summon the sun back after a gray Rotary Morning.

No Laura report this week.  Our intrepid exchange student is off on one last trip before saying good bye and head back to the other side of the Atlantic pond.

John Abbott provided the program and recounted his recent experiences while traveling in New Zealand, and in Europe . . .

A trip to Hobbit land.  John Abbott shared his photos and experiences from a fine trip to the New Zealand’s north island.  For some the highlight of the presentation was pictures of massive, 2,000 year old trees that had yet to be cut down.  For others, including this reporter, John’s pictures of the actual home town of the Hobbits from the Lord of the Rings was a real treat.

John threw in a few bonus pictures from a recent trip to Prague.

The only question remaining is this – Does John Abbott actually have a home here or just a PO Box?

A developing concern.  We have for several years made a Rotary First Harvest food donation in the name of our speaker.  Used to be that we donated 800 pounds, then 500 pounds and now it is down to 200 pounds.  What with the price of food and energy will we be soon donating a can of spaghetti in the name of our speaker?

Art, Steve and Erv gave an enthusiastic report on the Rotary International Convention and Rotary’s partnership with the Gates Foundation, UNICEF, the CDC and the World Health Organization to eradicate polio.  And they had a lot of fun too.

Note to all Rotarians – never miss the opportunity to spend a few days with Erv.  You will have a whole new definition of fun!

Speaking of Erv, a new day has dawned for the Sergeant of Arms position.  A new sheriff is in town.  Hold onto your wallets, watch what you say and dig out the old fine waivers.

News flash:  Our very own Julian Denes placed 26th overall in the Sea Fair Marathon and 4th in his age category.  Way to go Julian.

President Chris spoke for all of us in acknowledging the fine year of leadership the Rick Pisani gave to the club.  We all appreciated how Rick ended each meeting with a fine witticism.  President Chris has started his own new tradition – he will be giving us some very bad jokes at the end of the meeting.  Something about two fish in a foyer.

You had to be there to get it.

                                                                           Respectfully submitted, Art Haines

The Chief won a bottle of absynthe (check my spelling).  He was not willing to give anyone a taste of it.

Daryl Eckland recounts his recent experiences with our former exchange students while traveling through Europe!

Welcome to one of our newest Rotary  members -- Alex Hopkins!
