G.E.A Erv DeSmet reporting

The meeting was brought to order by President Chris Boland at 7:15 a.m.

Following a delicious breakfast, assigned Rotarians led us in the flag salute and invocation.

Song stylist Al Marsh led us in a very successful rendering of “In the Good Old Summertime.”  He had preceded our singing together with a review of how to pronounce the phrase “tootsie wootsie.”

Cynthia Daste spoke to us about the big upcoming event this weekend which is entitled “Wine Notes Concert” sponsored by the Woodinville Wine Country Association.  Many of our club members will be helping out at that event.

Kathleen O’Connor was our main speaker.  She spoke to us at great length about her 501(c)(3) organization known as Code Blue Now.  This is an organization dedicated to reform the health care system in our country.  She indicated to us that these kind of major changes can often come about through the efforts of people rather than through government.

Bill Schink and Susan Webster introduced Fran Walster of the Maltby Food Bank.  Our club presented the Maltby Food Bank with a donation of $2,000.00.  Fran reviewed for us the history of the Maltby Food Bank indicating that originally only about 15 families were being served.  Now that total is up to about 100.  Initially there were only 14 volunteers.  Now there are 40.  The amount of food that is being picked up has also increased as have the number of people coming to the food bank for assistance.  Fran told us that for a small food bank in an unincorporated area such as Maltby, the importance of the community standing by such a small food bank was essential.  She thanked us for our commitment to the food bank.

Terry Jarvis, Mayor for Life of the mystical Township of Grace, advised the assembly of the upcoming pig roast and car show and Junior Olympics to be held on August 9, 2008.

Evan McAllister’s cell phone went off twice during the meeting, and he volunteered $2.00 in fines to cover these events.  David Landau did not have a name badge, and he put $1.00 into the big giant wine glass for his fine.  Other members of the club were honored for various reasons, and they also contributed to the giant fee collection wine glass.

The meeting was adjourned on time.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED this                   day of July, 2008.
