Maltby Bill Schink Reporting

Highlights of the meeting of Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007

President Rick opened the meeting promptly at 7:30AM. President-elect Chris Boland led the salute to the flag, Steve Dolan read an inspiring invocation, and Vicki  Puckett led us in song.    Laura had a slow week, baking cookies, tried out for the high school basketball team and watched a movie. No guests or visiting Rotarians except our guest speaker Steve Lingenbrink, Assistant District 5030 Director.

In recognition of November being Rotary Foundation month, Wayne Parris introduced Steve Lingenbrink –Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow --to talk on the Rotary Foundation and the work it supports.  He presentation focused primarily on overseas projects that he was personally involved with over the last eight years.  This included projects in Romania, Russia , Guatemala and Kenya.  A four-year effort in Romania and Russia with large populations of orphans, projects included establishing medical and dental clinics, warm coats for winter and purchase and distribution of food.  In Guatemala working with local Rotary Clubs, purchased land for displaced people, initiated clean water projects that reduced child mortality rates from 50% to 0%. Sanitation projects that included septic systems with residue material being compost used to fertilize coffee trees.   Took his wife and children on several of the trips and developed lifetime friends.  Kenya worked in the slums of Nairobe (240 in total) with no infrastructure and 35+% unemployment and installed clean water and 500 sanitary latrines.  Also did similar projects in the rural areas of Mfangano Island, Migori and Laikipia.  None of these projects would have happened without Rotary.

Announcements included:

Larry Duffield wants to raise $1,000 to purchase 50 large size coats for the Warm Coats event scheduled December 8, 2007 at the Northshore Junior High School.  For November, will continue to raise funds for this program.  In the first week of December, there will be a raffle/auction to raise funds with the prize a stay at the Woodmark Hotel with spa and restaurant features.

Susan Webster indicated dictionary distribution to Northshore 3rd graders would start today, with Cottage Lake, Bear Creek and East Ridge this week.  Next week plan for Kokanee, Sunrise and Woodin.

Rick Pisani announced he will not be here next week and the Board Meeting will be rescheduled to November 27, 2007.

Chris Boland reminded us that Show Your Colors/Show Your Stuff is the program for next week.  Bring memories and memorabilia and there will be a judges panel and prizes.

Eric Greenwood reminded us that the Christmas party is December 4 at the Monte Villa Farmhouse and requested that people sign up and bring a bottle(s) of “good” (good was not defined) wine.

The raffle included the marble draw and a bottle of wine provided by Jay Soloff, a newly released DeLille Cellars 2005 Deyonne Aix (52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Syrah and 2% Mourvedre).  Bill Schink had the first winning number, selected the wine and put it up for auction, with the proceeds going to Larry Duffield’s large size coat program.  Jay Soloff played auctioneer and the bottle went to Eric Greenwood for a generous bid of  $100.  The marble pot was $143 but unfortunately Wayne Parris didn’t draw the white one.

Rick closed the meeting at 8:30AM
