Membership
Proposed
The
Board has approved the proposed membership of Alex Hopkins
of Woodinville. Alex is the immediate past president of the
Edmonds Rotary Club. He is proposed by the membership committee.
This is the second of two notices regarding this membership
proposal. Questions or concerns relative to Alex joining the
dynamic Woodinville Rotary Club should be addressed to the
President or Secretary. Alex's
classification is Sales-Laboratory Equipment. Alex, his wife Julie
and son Matthew are active in the Woodinville Community. |
Memberships
Proposed
The
Board, at its June 11 meeting, voted to extend invitations of
membership to Roger Martindill and to Trish Knox.
Membership would be effective July 1. Roger has served the past
year as president of the Ballard Rotary Club and has been a
frequent visitor and participant in Woodinville club activities.
Trish is affiliated with the Children's Home Society and is active
in projects focusing on the preservation of Sammamish Valley
agriculture. This is the first of two notices regarding the
membership proposals.

Good
news for continued support of future charitable giving work
by Woodinville Rotary.
Banner
Bank has notified the club of its plans to extend support of
Rotary Wine'n Shine and our primary beneficiaries for an
additional three years at the $15,000 per year level in
2009, 2010 and 2011. Presentation of the bank's 2008
contribution will be made at the June 24 installation event.
The club is indebted to the bank. Banner has participated
with Woodinville Rotary in each of our 17 years of special
fund-raising events, contributing more than $250,000 during
that period toward the club's ability to give more than $1.5
million back to the community and to international Rotary
programs. Congrats to Kathy Kill for spearheading
this request. |

New
bylaws
for
Charitable
Foundation |
At
the behest of Rotary International, Rotary clubs have been asked
to differentiate the leadership of club charitable foundations
from that of the operating club. First steps in this direction for
our club were taken at the June 11 board meeting as the Board
approved the structure of bylaws for Woodinville Rotary Charitable
Foundation. The proposed new bylaws are under review as to form
and will be presented to the full membership of Woodinville Rotary
Club in July for review and final approval. The new Foundation
bylaws call for the immediate past president to serve as chair of
a five-member board of trustees including incoming president-elect
and president-elect-elect, a senior member of the club and the
chair of the annual charity fund raising event. The Foundation is
responsible for investing and distributing charitable funds raised
by the club at the annual Rotary Wine'n Shine event. |

Woodinville
Wine Country (our community service partner in
charity fund-raising) is counting on our club to provide
volunteers July 25, 26 and 27 to help stage its first Wine
Notes Concertfest. Plan to participate in this important event
as the club's charity work is the primary beneficiary of the
two-day event. A great number of volunteers will be needed at
Marymoor Park -- particularly on Saturday and Sunday, the days of
the concerts. Funds earmarked for Woodinville Rotary will go
towards establishing an endowment to permanently support our
scholarship program in the viticulture and enology programs at WSU
and Walla Walla Community College. The Woodinville and state wine
industry leaders count on these college programs to provide
trained, experienced men and women to work in their vineyards and
wineries. The link to Wine Notes is at left.
Our very own Larry Duffield (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy) is coordinating our participation. Check out this
headliner group...and go to their jukebox to hear the sounds of
BBVD. |
Ready
to fire up
ceramic
water filters
for villagers |
UW
Bothell's Village Volunteers Club has raised enough
funds to build a working ceramics kiln in Kenya now that recent
political upheaval appears to have subsided and the international
organization is ready to enter the initial stage of a major
project to take clean water filtering systems to the villages of
Kiminini. A volunteer is scheduled to leave this month to work
with leaders in Kiminini as project manager. We'll get a progress
report in September. Meanwhile, check out this Bothell
Reporter column for more details of the status of the
program and our club's involvement. The club to date has donated
enough money to provide filters for 150 families in Kiminini and
has set aside proceeds from the 2007 Wine'n Shine event to help
with the next phase to provide training and a structure to house
the manufacture of the ceramic filtering systems.

21
Acres
education
endowment |
The club has established a new endowment within the Northshore
Scholarship Foundation. The new endowment was funded at the June
11 Board meeting at $25,000 and will be known as the Woodinville
Rotary-21 Acres Education Endowment. By making the donation prior
to June 30, the club's new endowment is eligible to receive funds
(approximately $1500) that will be available for scholarships or
internships at 21 Acres in the spring of 2009. The club will
establish and oversee criteria, eligibility and the selection
process for grants recommended by 21
Acres.
Funds
for the endowment were raised at the 2006 and 2007 Rotary Wine'n
Shine events with the Board adding $4000 to meet the minimum
funding requirement for an individual endowment within the
Northshore Scholarship Foundation.
The club also oversees the Woodinville
Rotary Club endowment, the Jerry Wilmot Masters of Business
Endowment at UW Bothell, the Peg Phillips Theater Arts endowment,
the Malinowski-Marston Communications endowment and the Pride
Family Memorial endowment. All provide funds for annual
scholarships that are in addition to club financed and sponsored
scholarships at Woodinville High School, Cascadia Community
College, Secondary Academy for Success and University of
Washington Bothell. |
Exchange
student chair Larry Duffield is looking for one more host
family
for the young woman arriving from Bolivia in August.
For
those collecting wine donations for
Wine'n Shine in October, you can bring the cases or selection of bottles
to a meeting and they will be stored in the club temperature-controlled
storage unit.
