Chief Don Fitz Jr., your Rotary Reporter As
reported by Chief Fitz We
had several guests, including:
Tom Quigley
Trish Knox
Norm Nobel
Jan Runkel – who is moving to Palm Springs area
Rick Helberg – who is moving to Mexico
Dave Surface - Everett Rotary Executive Director of Camp Fire
Michael Deal – Operations Manager Camp Fire
Laura Brent – Speaker – Project Manager of Woodinville High
School Refurbishing
Project
Mike Funis – Chairman of the Task Force for WHS Refurbishing
John Goebel – Lead architect for WHS renovation project. Laura
gave us an update on her activities.
She has been busy with tests and projects.
She enjoyed the Rotary District Meeting.
And she was sad to miss her Prom and Homecoming due to Rotary
functions in Wenatchee. Vickie
Puckett introduced the speakers who explained the Woodinville High
School renovation project in detail.
The entire project is broken into two phases and will likely top
$100,000 million. The first
phase is funded and about to start construction.
The second phase will be on the ballot as a bond issue in 2010.
The project has obviously included a lot of thought and planning
and the proposed results look very good. There
were lots of questions. Susan
Webster and Joe Truglio presented a check for $2000 to Campfire. They reported that this will put them at $1.8 million in
their capital drive. They
expect to hit $2 million by the end of this month.
Their goal is $2.7 million.
Camp Killoquah serves 12 thousand kids per year.
It served 67 other organizations (besides Campfire) last year,
including 37 schools. Duffield
reported that we have an exchange student coming from Bolivia and we are
looking for host families. On
September 21 the Rotary exchange students will be going on an Argosy
cruise. Anyone wanting to
donate time, money, music, snacks, etc. should contact Chris. Susan
said we will distribute the last 100 dictionaries at Woodin Elementary
at 11:30 on Friday. Show up
if you can. Max missed the marble, in fact wasn’t even close. It was almost black! Laura did not hesitate and took the Cold Stone ice cream certificate. Ken grabbed the IOU for $100 from Jay Fiske. Susan
Webster gave a very interesting classification talk.
She was born in Ohio, moved to Lexington, Kentucky and graduated
from high school in Stanford, Connecticut.
After short periods of college in New Jersey, and Colorado State,
she went to Estes Park as a tour guide, Breckenridge as a ski bum, and
polished her skiing skills for five years.
Then she got serious and went to Boulder and graduated from that
stellar school, The University of Colorado (your Rotary Reporter’s
school too, of course), in nursing. She
married and moved to Virginia where she worked for the Jones Institute
in reproductive medicine, and, coincidentally had two daughters. Following that she moved to Woodinville where she established
herself in the community, started a business (the Gathering Fabrics
Quilt Shop), became involved in the Chamber of Commerce, and practically
runs the City government (RR’s comment).
She received great assistance and advice from Rotarian Jan Runkel
and joined Rotary in 2004. Aren’t
we lucky to have her?! Sergeant
Baaab fined Bob Rosso for shooting spotted owls in Rotary Park, Rick
Helberg for some kind of obscene dancing in the parlor, and Jan Runkel
because it was his last chance. There
were several happy bucks. Don’t
forget installation dinner on June 24th. Respectfully submitted, Chief Fitz
