The day broke bright and clear this Tuesday morning, and
the joy of seeing blue skies led us to….No, wait. It
was cloudy and raining. Maybe that’s why we sang
“Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”? Brilliantly, we
might add….
For
those in harm’s way….
We launched immediately into the morning’s program,
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, presented by
David Doud, a fellow Rotarian from the Bellevue club.
When not involved in his volunteer duties, David works
for Wallace Properties.
The “ESGR” is a volunteer group which helps
members of the National Guard and Reserves who, having
served their country, are returning to civilian life.
Established in 1972 with the return of soldiers from
Viet Nam, the group aids the soldiers in their
transitions to civilian life, such as offering mediation
between returnees and employers, and other support. Although a wholly volunteer organization, the group operates
under the auspices of the U.S. Dept. of Defense.
The ESGR also publicly recognizes employers who have
strongly supported those employees who have been called
to active duty. And, the ESGR may also arrange to have
employers visit the sites where their employees train,
in order to give them an idea of the hardships those
employees go through.
Currently, over half of the active armed forces for the
U.S. are made up of National
Guard units and Reserves. Here in Washington State, over
12,000 men and women have been activated since 2001,
involving more than 5500 employers.
Nikki
on the line…..
Guess
who’s cell phone went off in the midst of the program?
Nikita Sugandh, our most recent exchange student called
“Uncle John” to let him (us) know that she had just
arrived back safely in India. Hugo shared the call via
the loudspeaker on his phone, thereby probably saving
him a fine from the Sarge…..No rest for Nikita…her
school starts Monday.
Time’s
running out….
The
number of signees for the upcoming final work project on
the Rotary Park (July 28) is woefully small. Like, two.
Pres. Rick awarded Wayne Parris and Dennis Johnson
digital clocks (for knowing that time is of the essence,
I suppose).
Auction
song and dance team….
THAT
would be the Chris and Gregg show, all about remembering
the upcoming auction, and that IT’S NOT TOO EARLY to
submit auction items… The website showing the list is
now up and running.
They
also want to remind the membership that each person is
asked to supply a bottle of wine for the wine barrel.
Project
Linus….
…is
an effort by local quilters to make small quilts for use
by Woodinville Fire and Life Safety to comfort kids who
are being cared for after fires or other traumatic
events. Susan Webster and Dennis Johnson recognized
those efforts, being headed up by Linda Lane of WFLS.
The quilts are distributed to hospitals and even carried
in emergency vehicles for immediate access.
Picnic
time….
Don’t
forget to sign up for the 5th Tuesday Social,
to be held at 6 pm at the Wilmot Park.
Inglewood
frolic….
Bill
Gowin says there’s still time (but not much)
to sign up for the golf tourney to be held on Friday,
July 20th, at Inglewood Country Club. Bill
guarantees the weather, and $100 buys a round, cart,
food, and prize. Lunch at 12:00, tee-off at 1 pm…. (Late
breaking news, the event was washed out and will be
rescheduled in August).
Lost
his marbles….
Somehow,
Pres. Rick’s box of marbles has dwindled to just 22.
Didn’t we start out with 52? Does former Pres. Gary
know anything about this? He claims that a whole box of
marbles is “awfully heavy”….. No marble this week
– even if there were only 22…(as an addendum, the
membership present voted to increase the number of
marbles in the box, and Jay Fiske suggested that we
establish some limited number of marbles below which we
would not go. Just ‘cause HE didn’t have his number
punched last week….)
The
Sarge…
Becky
Clark was given a fine waiver for gracefully
relinquishing her golf title by going on the DL for the
upcoming tourney….
Hugo
got a reprieve – and a waiver – for sharing his
phone gossip with the world…
Roger
Starbuck found himself and spouse pinups in the Seattle
Magazine. As a result, he also found himself $2
lighter…
Erv
“Legs” DeSmet was happy to bike what he estimated
was “about 80,000 feet” up the side of Mt Ranier…
Jerry
Cufley proudly
announced the impending marriage of his daughter…
Roger
Stark was back in the news with the announcement that
his car took first place in its class at a recent
race…add “hot car” to his “hot sax”…
Chris
Boland – the Sarge himself – described some juvenile
behavior in which somebody ….ummm…blew up….an
anvil?....
B-duh-b-duh that’s all, folks!
