See Hugo Briefs below for details on how we can easily raise community service funds just by purchasing tickets for this month's second annual event sponsored by the Woodinville Chamber.

Covering May 8 meeting

Club-Administration-Chair-elect Bill Schink reporting

President Gary Whitsell brought the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 AM, on a rare warm and sunny morning.  Joe Truglio led the salute to the Flag, Max Zellweger the Invocation and our music director Vicki Puckett lead us in God Bless America.

Nikita was excited about her upcoming prom and shared plans for the event. She has a date, attire, limo and after dance/prom party plans.  Appears everything is in place for a memorable event. (Only remaining detail is the approval by Rotary aunts and uncles of her "date").

Gary Whitsell praised the Rotary’s weekly newsletter, extolling it as a great literary piece and that the new direction of having a different news writer each week keeps it fresh.

Joe Truglio introduced our guest speaker, Chuck Arnold, the Director of Ticket Sales/Operations for the Seattle Seahawks.  Chuck has been with the Seahawks organization for 14 years, starting as a PR Intern out of Washington State, with assignments in scouting before settling into the ticket office.  He provided an interesting historical perspective on the change in fortunes for the Seahawks during that time– from a losing team to a winning Super Bowl contender, from “begging” people to purchase tickets to a waiting list of over 10,000 for season ticket holders.  Major milestones included, approval of Referendum 48 to construct a new football stadium, purchase of the team by Paul Allen, moving out of the Kingdom, an interim 2 years at Husky Stadium and fielding a sports product that has attracted strong demand for tickets.

Key Announcements by:

Russ Mykytyn, representing District 5030 Governor Mike Montgomery -- The Rotary Family Day at Memorial Stadium will consist of noon-time entertainment for Rotarians, their spouses and friends, family, kids, grandkids and others. It will have a very short administrative program (5 minutes or so), followed by on-field entertainment, featuring: the Seattle Schools All-City Marching Band, the championship Seattle Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps, the Navy Region Northwest Marching Band and the UW Husky Pep Band. This will be the first of what is intended to be annual Rotary entertainment celebrations on the final Wednesday of the Rotary fiscal year. This is an official District event and constitutes a makeup for all Rotarians.  Sign up sheets were available at the meeting. Details

Tana  Baumler & John Hughes  -- the 23rd Northshore Scholarship recognition breakfast will be held May 23, 2007 to honor 89 recipients, including 17 from Woodinville High, with $147,910 in scholarships.  Our Club is responsible for providing 18 volunteers for set up and support and will be required at 5:30AM.  David and Mary Jane Landau will be catering again this year.  Please sign up with Tana, this is a great experience.

Larry Duffield -- next foreign exchange student is Laura Topin, from Reims, France and she will be arriving late August.  A host family is needed. (Ed. Note: She doesn't care for Brussels sprouts! but speaks Mandarin Chinese!)

Bill Schink – Maltby Food Bank hosted an open house May 8 to celebrate with the community the installation of the walk-in freezer and cooler and the burning of the mortgage – the Food Bank now owns the property.  The Woodinville Rotary was instrumental in the purchase of the building and all are welcome. Details and Photos

Bob Maynard and Al Marsh (the Pair of Docs musical group) -- entertained the residents of the Peters Creek Retirement & Assisted Living Community of Redmond.  Their performance was so appreciated that the residents donated $60 for Rotary First Harvest.  The Docs presented the check to Bill Schink, our Rotary First Harvest representative.

Bob Rosso’s raffle ticket number was drawn but unfortunately for Bob the white marble remains elusive.   There are 6 marbles left with close to $600 in the pot – buy “hands full” of tickets at the next meeting as the chance of winning continues to rapidly improve.

Upcoming events to note on you calendar are:

·        May 19 - District Assembly for Officers/Committee Chairs

·        May 22 - Joint Meeting of Old & New Club leadership 7 AM at the Grange

·        May 23 - Northshore Scholarship Recognition Breakfast at Northshore Senior Center

·        June 3 - work party at Rotary Community Park

·        June 5  - 5th Tuesday Social at the Jarvis estate.

·        June 26 - Installation of Officers/Directors Dinner

Gary closed the meeting promptly at 8:30 AM.

                                                   Respectfully submitted  --- Bill Schink

Hugo Briefs . . . Pete Rose report from San Juan Island:  According to San Juan Island "commissioner" Kevin Ranker, former Woodinville Rotarian Pete Rose is doing a bang up jog as the island county's administrator. Pete left Woodinville in July of 2006 to take on the assignment. The Council is made up of six elected officials, requiring at least a 4-2 vote to pass legislation. According to Ranker, San Juan County is the only legislative body of its kinds operating with an even number of election officials. More about Pete . . . Rotary International President (2007-08) Wilf Wilkinson invites clubs, districts, and Rotarians to a Presidential Membership Conference in Vancouver, BC (Richmond) on Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11, 2007. More... . . . Joe Truglio has provided the club with an "easy" fund raiser and it's tied to the May 26-27 Washington Wine Highway Event at Chateau Ste. Michelle. 10 per cent of the ticket price will go to Woodinville Rotary for community service projects if we identify ourselves as members or supporters of Woodinville Rotary. Per his email earlier this week, "Follow the instructions below and our Rotary club will receive 10% of ticket purchases made by Rotary members, guests and friends:
  • Go to www.washingtonwinehighway.com
  • At the site bottom, click "Buy Tickets"
  • When you get to the "Payment Method", you will see a tiny wine glass on the left side below the "Card Expiration Date"
  • Click the wine glass and it will open a "Special Event Code" box...You must type in "Chardonnay" and we will receive the 10% donation.
  • Continue to purchase your tickets.

Bob Rosso also liked the odds, but not the color of the marble at last week's meeting. Only six marbles remain in the box.
