Posted December 1, 2007 Reprinted from Nov. 26, 2007 edition of Woodinville Weekly Ron Paul Baum is 2007 Woodinville Citizen of the Year Ron Paul Baum has been chosen as Woodinville’s 2007 Citizen of the Year. Those who know the accomplished artist describe him as a calm, soft-spoken man, who often works quietly behind the scenes to teach others about the importance of community. “Ron has done so much to knit this community together,” comments Susan Webster, Director of Service Projects for the Woodinville Rotary Club. “He has helped bring people together and in the process, he has also helped Woodinville shine.” Baum’s contributions as a volunteer have focused on emphasizing the value of our natural resources and lands. Early on, he saw a need to bring individuals and businesses of the Sammamish Valley together and was instrumental in creating the Sammamish Valley Alliance (SVA). His specially designed SVA flags have played a prominent role in attracting visitors to the various agricultural events in the Valley. And he was instrumental in organizing the recent Woodinville Harvest Festival, which united individual farm owners and businesses in the agricultural community with area residents. “Ron was a real catalyst for this event,” adds Webster. “And it was a great success on all levels – art, agriculture, business and the community.” Baum has also donated his time to illustrating the vision of a one hundred acre working farm, display gardens and arboretum. He spent countless hours sketching and painting renditions of the Valley and plans for 21 Acres, Woodinville Farm, the Grange Garden and other projects. “Ron grasped the vision and saw so much more, as he realized the value of an interconnected valley of people and place,” explains Tom Quigley, owner of Olympic Nursery in Woodinville. “He has planted many seeds in our community and as a result of his toil, we all reap the harvest.” Baum’s other contributions have included serving on the boards and advisory councils for various local organizations, including the Sammamish Valley Grange, Hollywood Hill Homeowners Association, the Sammamish Valley Alliance, 21 Acres Trail Committee and several artisan groups. Additionally, he has worked closely with the Woodinville Heritage Society to resurrect the Washkuhn Sawmill and to create the Native Woodland Heritage Garden at Woodinville Farm. Another one of his efforts has been to establish an artisans’ gallery, featuring artwork that celebrates the heritage of the Greater Sammamish Valley Region. “Ron always steps forward to offer his help,” says Webster. “He does it without being asked because he cares and he wants to make a difference in the community. He always has a smile on his face and he’s a joy to work with. You can depend on Ron to have great ideas and to get things done.” She adds, “Ron deserves this recognition for all that he has done for Woodinville. We’re lucky to have someone like him in our community.” |
