FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Grand Exalted Appreciator Erv DeSmet presented trophy to Tom Quigley of Olympic Nursery

Greater Grace Wine Appreciation Society
names Tom Quigley recipient

Grace, WA. – April 22, 2009 –  Tom Quigley, a strong advocate for the preservation of agriculture land in the Sammamish Valley, has been named recipient of the second “Bacchus” award from the Greater Grace Wine Appreciation Society.

The award was announced at the 2009 Earth Day Dinner held by Woodinville Rotary Club to raise funds for the club’s scholarships in viticulture and enology at Walla Walla Community College and Washington State University.

Quigley is owner-operator of Olympic Nursery in Woodinville and a leader in advocacy for sustainable restoration of the valley for farm use. The first recipient was Leigh Henderson, in 2008, whose restaurant and catering services emphasize farm-to-table menus. Henderson operates Alexa’s Café in Bothell and the Monte Villa Farmhouse in the North Creek Valley business park.

The award was made by Rotarian Erv DeSmet who also presented a scholarship renewal of $3,000 to Catherine Hinken Jones, a graduate student in viticulture at WSU. Ms. Jones is an Inglemoor High School graduate and long-time employee of the Yakima Fruit Market in Bothell. She will be doing vineyard fieldwork in the Prosser area next term.

Special guest for the evening was Lisa Baer, representing the 40+-member Woodinville Wine Country organization which supports the Rotary scholarship program. The scholarship to Ms. Jones was awarded in memory of Ms. Baer’s brother Lance, founder of Baer Winery in Woodinville. The two $3,000 scholarships are part of more than $76,000 that Woodinville Rotary will issue in college tuition grants during 2009.

The annual April 22 Rotary dinner featured a Farmhouse menu of food items from local “Growing Washington” producers from Bellingham to Bow to Tonasket as well as complementing wine selections from Chateau Ste. Michelle of Woodinville.

Inducted into the charity organization were Dottie and Eric Greenwood, Rosario and Jorge Gonzalez, Cherry Jarvis, Celeste and Alex Racz, Cherry Tinker, Lisa and Mike Visse, Janis and Evan McAllister, Debby Carter and Ms. Baer.
